LESO – EPFL
Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, or EPFL, is one of the premier academic institutions in Switzerland and Europe. Charged with three missions - education, research and technology transfer at the highest international level - EPFL is associated with several specialized research institutes, and combined with its sister institution in Zurich, the schools are among the pre-eminent educational establishments in the world.
The EPFL has always nurtured a spirit of adventure and is dedicated to pursuing innovative projects that combining fundamental and applied research. For instance, among of the more famous projects to come out of EPFL's Solar Energy and Building Physics Laboratory, or LESO, is Solar Impulse - the challenge of flying a solar-powered aircraft around the world.
Meanwhile, the EPFL-Alinghi Partnership is a nine-year old venture combining several EPFL labs and Ernesto Bertarelli's entry for the 33rd America's Cup sailing race. As scientific advisor, EPFL is contributing research to improve areas like fluid dynamics, composite materials, optics, sail visualization and route optimization.
